A note about hinged lense goggles

Hinged goggle allow the comparision of two conditions for detecting nystagmus during provocationmaneuvers such as Hall-Pike Dix – one in which fixation is unimpairied (room illuminated and lenses up) with immediate switch over to a situation where fixation is eliminated (room illumination is decreased and lenses are flipped down).  Rapid comparison of the two conditions is often helpful in confirming whether eye movements are truly nystagmoid.   Flip-up lenses also allow cleaning of the lenses if they become fogged without removing tham from the patient.
