This is a new method of assessing cutaneous spatial resolution. Each of
the 8 acrylic probes have a dome shaped head with alternating
ridge/slot patterns of different widths. The ridged head is pressed
against the skin, and the
patient/subject reports the alignment of the ridges, longitudinal or
transverse. Recent research shows that:
1) The Van Boven domes detect reported sensitivity deficits that
cannot be detected or quantified with Von Frey hairs or two point
calipers.
2) Measurements are reproducible
and are not subject to learning effects.
3) The neuroanatomical basis for
performance in this test is the density of innervation of
mechanoreceptive afferents (touch fibers).
(Van Boven and Johnson, The Limit of Tactile Spatial Resolution
in Humans, Neurology 44: 2361-2366, 1994). Blank and replacement domes
also available $75. Set of 8 in case - $550

Tactile acuity cube. Used for grating orientation/discrimination tasks.
Tactile Acuity Cube is a swollen cube with grids of different spacing
(0.75, 1.25, 1.75, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 mm) cut into each of the 6 swollen
sides. TAC-1
Rolltemp is designed for quick screening
of temperature sensibility over large body areas. It uses
two rollers on handles, one roller being warm and the other cold. A
base unit, where the rollers are placed in between investigations,
charge the rollers with thermal energy to their predetermined
temperature levels, 25 ºC and 40 ºC. With a normal skin
temperature of 32 ºC this corresponds to temperatures that are 7
ºC lower and 8 ºC higher than normal skin temperature. These
temperatures are selected as relevant to screen between normal and
abnormal temperature sensibility. In normal use, the roller is
removed from the base unit and rolled over the skin of the patient. The
patient then determines the corresponding sensation and areas with
normal/abnormal sensibility can rapidly be mapped out. $1500.

and neuropathic feet of diabetic patients. The kit includes a new high
sensitivitiy Multi Dopplex II Bi-directional Doppler, VP8-HS, sphyg,
toe and arm cuffs and a Neuropen.
Applications include:
Ankle Brachial Pressure Index.
Toe Brachial Pressure Index.
Detect Neuropathy.

or the Dopplex Printa II package).

DFKIT-1, $1495

Ready to go after only a few hours in the freezer, the CryoStim Probe
is an effective, simple method for testing cold sensitivity. The blue
ice gel can be applied over the treatment area to enhance conductivity.
The set includes 2 probes and 1 tube of gel. Additional conductive gel
may be purchased in sets of 6.
CS-1 $34.95
Discrimination weights
The discrimination weights consist of two series of 24 weights. The
light series weighs from
75 to 125 grams, and the heavy series weighs from 175 to
225 grams. They are unbreakable and identical in color, size and
texture. Use them with a fingertip grip to measure perception of
pressure sensitivity. $195

Vibratron 2 consists of a small controller and
two separate vibrating rods. Vibration amplitude, which is continuously
adjustable, is displayed on the front panel.
There are two ranges. For fine control, 0
- 6.5 vibration units corresponds to 0 - 20 microns. For low
resolution, 6.5 - 19.9 vibration units corresponds to the 0 - 200
microns. A table and a formula are provided for conversion of vibration
units to microns.

NTE-2 provides a means of measuring the sensitivity to temperature of a
person's hands and feet. The temperature difference between two plates
is sensed with fingers and toes, using a two-alternative forced choice
paradigm.
Each plate is driven by a thermoelectric
(Peltier effect) module; these modules have the unique ability to
provide temperatures both above and below room temperature.

The NTE2A Thermal Probe is a sophisticated, non-invasive device
for the clinical evaluation of neuropathy and the assessment of short
fiber neurological function. Individual thresholds are compared to
normals that can then be used to track nerve function over time. It can
also be used for pain studies and in any application where a variable,
accurately controlled temperature stimulus is required.

Tacticon
The Tacticon ™ is a small, hand held, passive medical device that the
FDA has recently allowed to be marketed to screen patients for evidence
of subclinical peripheral neuropathy of the fingers and toes. The
Tacticon ™ permits quantitative sensory testing (QST) as recommended by
the American Diabetes Association Consensus Panels on Diabetic
Peripheral Neuropathy. Circumferential discrimination testing is
designed to measure larger, myelinated fiber integrity and
mechanoreceptors utilizing a series of rods of progressively increasing
circumference which when applied to the surfaces, provide exact
assessments of fiber integrity which parallels that of vibration.
